Robert Bussey's career defining "Attic Symphony III - The Moonlit Attic" set for a late 2011 release. And now, A tale about a tale...
Hello Friends and Fans,
I am pleased to announce that recording is now underway for the album that I believe will be the defining work of my music career: "Attic Symphony III - The Moonlit Attic". I strongly believe that every aspect of my musical journey thus far has been leading up to this musical work that will include an accompanying short story which weaves a fictional tale about the discovery of an unknown work of Mozart in Prague and it's subsequent role in end time events.
For the longest time, I've held a fascination with the concept album. Those seventies era Rush and Pink Floyd albums, Camel's "The Snow Goose", Genesis "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". then on into the nineties with Savatage's "Wake Of The Magellan" and "Dead Winter Dead"(which set the foundation for Trans Siberian Orchestra), not to mention Dream Theater's "Scenes From a Memory", and the list goes on. I love music that is adventurous and captivating. So how did the idea of "The Moonlit Attic" come about? Read on.
During the nineties when I had the band The Calm together, we were contemplating a name change. The name Attic Symphony was one that I had proposed, but didn't make the cut. I held onto it for possible future use. Around the year 2000, I contemplated writing a concept album around that title and dubbing it "The Attic Symphony". Around the same time I had released The Fault Line Dance and was working on a reunion album with Taker, my metal band from the eighties. After all it was 2000, the new era for band reunions.
I initially had set "The Attic Symphony" for a 2003 release. But after relocating to Charlotte and the Taker reunion failing to materialize, I decided to put the recordings from those two years of work into what is now known as Attic Symphony I, a retrospective of pulling the old metal songs from the musical "attic", dusting them off and giving them a fresh spin as an instrumental release. Somewhere along the way, I read a biography on C.S.Lewis and was thus inspired to compose an album based on his concept of Northerness, a word he coined to describe the spiritual longings that he had periodically from childhood on that set him on a journey from atheism to becoming one of the most prolific Christian thinkers in modern history. The end result was 2007's Attic Symphony II - Cold Vast and Severe".
Last February, I finally began writing the story for that which is now entitled "The Moonlit Attic". The story is nearing completion and most of the music has been composed. The story weaves a tale of intrigue, musicology and eschatology surrounding Mozart and the mysterious messenger that showed up at his door to commision him to compose a Requiem, as well as his musical arch rival Antonio Sabrieli. The story brings those themes into the 21st century. I became quite fascinated with Mozart after seeing a full orchestral and choral performance of Requiem by the Asaph Ensemble at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C several years ago. It was an astounding musical experience. Of course the music on "The Moonlit Attic" will be guitar oriented prog rock, far from a classical masterpiece, none the less, I believe the music will move the story forward very well and at some point could be scored for an orchestral rendering.
With my previous band involvements on the local scene which have ranged from country, urban pop and most recently, my portrayal of Neal Schon in the Journey tribute band Trial By Fire, now behind me, I am now solely focused on bringing "The Moonlit Attic" to fruition. The tracking order is as follows:
1- Visitation
2- Riding The Crescendo
3- Two Nights by Eagle's Flight
4- The Gravestone Key
5- The Moonlit Attic
6- The Attic Symphony
7- The Catching Away Suite
Part 1- Apocalyptic Overtones
Part 2- Epic Propulsion
Part 3- The Eternal Crescendo
The Gravestone Key will be the first single from the album."Apocalyptic Overtones" originally appeared on 2001's "The Fault Line Dance" and fits perfectly within the concept. The new version will be much heavier and more gothic sounding than the original. "Two Nights By Eagle's Flight" also appeared on TFD as the song "Eagle Bay", but has now evolved into an elaborate solo guitar arrangement under the new name. On the flip side, as a part of "The Catching Away Suite", there will be a full band arrangement of "Epic Propulsion" (which appeared as a solo acoustic fingerstyle piece on Attic Symphony I). This also fits within the theme of the album.
The music on "The Moonlit Attic" promises to be imaginitive and cinematic much like Pain Of Salvation, Coheed and Cambria and prog metal newcomers Scale The Summit. There will be some Queen "A Night At The Opera" moments as well. The way that Brian May captures that Big Band sound with his guitar arrangements was ingenious. I plan to tap into that. The Moonlit Attic will also contain my first song ever composed on bass guitar.
I hope to have the album completed and ready to release by fall of 2011. My goal is to have the story presented in CD booklet form, completely illustrated. Make sure you're on the mailing list so that you get the latest updates. I invite you to take this journey with me via my studio blog on this site where you will get exclusive insights to the creation of this landmark album.
